SERVPRO® of Metairie: Why water removal is vital to successful restoration

2/27/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: Water damage can wreak havoc on homes and businesses, causing significant destruction and lasting damage. SERVPRO of Metairie, the water damage restoration experts serving Harahan, LA, explains how prompt and thorough water removal is essential in minimizing further damage and beginning the restoration process.

Water damage is a prevalent issue for homeowners in Harahan, LA, but SERVPRO of Metairie offers swift and efficient water damage restoration services. Whether it's from a burst pipe or a natural disaster, their team of experts is equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to handle any situation. Prompt action is essential to avoid mold growth, structural damage, and health risks. The company aims to mitigate the damage by removing the water, drying the area, cleaning it, and making necessary repairs.

Water removal is one of the most critical steps in the water damage restoration process. Water removal is extracting standing water from a home or building. It is the first step in the restoration process and the most important one. Here's why.

Prevents further damage

When a home is flooded or experiences water damage, standing water can cause significant damage to the structure and personal belongings. If left unaddressed, standing water can seep into floors, walls, and other structures, leading to rot and mold growth. By removing the water quickly, professionals can prevent further damage from occurring and minimize the risk of mold growth.

Reduces Drying Time

Water removal also reduces the drying time of a home or building. Removing standing water makes the air in the affected area less humid, and the drying process becomes more efficient. With the help of specialized equipment such as dehumidifiers, air movers, and moisture meters, professionals can dry out the affected area faster and prevent further damage.

Prevents Mold Growth

One of the most significant risks of water damage is mold growth. Mold thrives in moist environments, and standing water provides the perfect breeding ground for mold. If mold growth occurs, it can cause health risks and significant damage to the structure and personal belongings. By removing standing water quickly, professionals can prevent mold growth and minimize the risk of health hazards.

Reduces Restoration Costs

Water damage restoration can be a costly process. The longer water sits, the more damage it can cause and the more expensive the restoration process becomes. By removing standing water quickly, professionals can reduce the overall cost of the restoration process. This is because quick water removal minimizes the damage done to the structure and, therefore, reduces the number of repairs needed.

Increases Safety

Standing water can pose a safety hazard to homeowners. It can cause electrical hazards, slip and fall accidents, and even health risks. By quickly removing the standing water, professionals can increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents. Additionally, professionals are equipped with the proper safety gear to ensure their safety while removing the water.

Water removal is crucial for water damage restoration as it prevents further damage, reduces drying time, prevents mold growth, and increases safety. How to handle a flooded apartment and protect your property

1/25/2023 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Metairie highlights the steps to water removal from an apartment.

Being in a flooded apartment is an awful experience. The water can damage your belongings and put you out of your home for days. The effects of a flooded flat are numerous, ranging from mold growth to wet carpets and broken furnishings.

As a homeowner or renter, you must act fast when faced with water damage to limit the level of damage. The starting point is to get all the water out of the building.

The water restoration specialists at SERVPRO of Metairie, a leading water removal company in Harahan, have outlined the following tips for water removal in a flooded apartment.

1. Identify the cause of the flooding

Floods vary greatly from one another. Flooding from ruptured frozen pipes is different from flooding caused by a sewage backup. Identifying the precise cause of the flooding will increase the chances of quickly solving the issue.

Let's say the flooding in your residence results from a blocked and overflowing toilet. You may close the water valve supplying the toilet to prevent the flooding from getting worse.

2. Pump out the water

A pump can be helpful if you have standing water several inches deep. But, it’s important to pump slowly, as pumping water out too quickly could undermine the property’s foundations.

Sump pumps can be rented for approximately $50 per day or bought for $100 and higher. However, it’s always best to engage a water damage restoration expert, as they have the required tools, including industrial water pumps.

3. Use a bucket

Another way to get water from your property if you don’t have a pump is with a bucket. It’s very straightforward; pack the water in the bucket and pour it outside or inside a larger container, which you’ll discharge outside.

While this is economical, removing water with a bucket can be very stressful and time-consuming.

4. Contact your neighbors

Notifying your neighbors of the flood in your flat is polite, especially if you have downstairs neighbors.

Depending on the extent of the flooding, the water can easily flow into their flat from the ceiling. Giving them advance notice will prevent that unpleasant surprise and allow them time to take preventative measures.

5. Speak with your landlord

The next step is to contact your landlord if you rent rather than own your unit. You should contact your landlord as soon as possible to inform them about the problem because they are in charge of preventing damage to the property, including water damage.

6. Secure your belongings

If your apartment is flooded, you most likely won't be able to shield all of your belongings from water damage. You should relocate anything you can from the flooded area to prevent massive damage. The items can be kept in a room far from the flooded area or placed high enough so that the water won't reach them.

Grab as many belongings as you can if you have to evacuate your house due to flooding.

7. Speak with your insurance provider

Renters' insurance is a must if you rent a place. While the expense of fixing the structure is your landlord's responsibility, the loss of your personal property is probably covered by your renter's insurance policy.

However, keep in mind that damage from some types of flooding is typically not covered by renters' insurance. For instance, unless you have a particular flood rider, your renters' insurance usually won't cover the damage if your apartment floods during a hurricane.

SERVPRO of Metairie outlines five seasonal hazards and what to do to mitigate them

12/12/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Metairie outlines five seasonal hazards and the steps to handle them.

The spring, summer, fall, and winter seasons are lovely in their own way. However, every season comes with its unique risk for property owners and can wreak havoc on your home or business. In the winter, ice dams can form on your roofs and any uninsulated water pipes, leading to a burst. There's the risk of water damage to your property from heavy rainfall.

The restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Metairie, a top seasonal hazards and restoration company in Jefferson, share the top five seasonal hazards that can damage your property and how you can handle them.

1. Heavy rainfall

Rain is a risk throughout the year, but late spring and early summer rainfall can be particularly harsh on the exterior of your property.

It's crucial to visually inspect your roof for debris and damage that powerful storms can leave behind. The presence of granules close to your drains and loose shingles in your yard are signs that your roof needs repair.

The storm can also affect other components of your property. Inspect all of your property's openings, including the windows and doors. If not noticed immediately, damaged windows or doors can lead to water damage, costing you a lot more money.

2. Snow melting

Snow makes a stunning backdrop when you and your family are huddled around the fire. However, it can weigh down your roof to the point where it collapses. While your roof is made to be durable and can support a substantial amount of weight, including weight from snow, the roof caves in when the weight becomes too much.

Melting snow can also lead to flooding and water damage. When the snow melts as a result of indoor heat or sun, the moisture spreads throughout your property, finding its way into normally dry spaces.

To safeguard your property from snow damage, get a roof rake to easily clear the snow from your roof and avoid snow buildup.

3. Hail

Summer storms are infamous for delivering massive hail that can be quite dangerous for properties. When a hailstorm occurs, your only option is to wait and see how much damage it causes.

There's very little you can do to prevent hail damage except to ensure that every property component is well attached. Contact your insurance provider immediately if your property suffers any hail damage.

4. Wind and debris

Wind can blow debris around and cause harm to your property's siding, roof, windows, doors, and/or gutters. Your property is like a collection of interconnected systems that shield you from the elements.

So, when any of its components, like a roof shingle or siding, is damaged by a windstorm, it leaves a hole that can result in water damage.

Check your siding, roof shingles, door, and window seals to ensure their integrity and that your building can endure any upcoming windstorms.

5. Fires

More than 338,000 fires broke out in US properties in 2021, resulting in everything from minor smoke damage to complete disasters, including fatalities. You can do many things to stop a fire outbreak, like installing a fire alarm, monitoring lit candles, and ensuring that all appliances are in good shape.

SERVPRO of Metairie outlines the benefits of hiring a water removal expert versus doing it yourself

11/10/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO® of Metairie outlines the pros of working with a water damage restoration expert instead of doing it on your own.

As a property owner, it might seem cheaper to handle water damage issues yourself than hire a professional. After all, it just requires getting rid of the water, right? But water damage restoration involves much more, and hiring a water removal company can save you a lot of money in the long run.

The team at SERVPRO of Metairie, a full-service water damage restoration company in Metairie, LA, has outlined the following benefits of hiring a restoration specialist instead of going the DIY route when dealing with water damage:

1. Quick reaction and restoration

Water damage incidents can leave you disoriented. You'll need time to get yourself back and ensure everyone is safe before getting on with the restoration. Unfortunately, the effects of the water on your property only get worse every minute you wait. Quick restoration is necessary, and a water removal professional can help you achieve that.

After receiving your initial call, most water damage restoration specialists will respond within 2 to 4 hours to assist in containing the damage and halting its progression.

These professionals also have specialized tools and extensive experience, so the restoration process will be faster than if you do it yourself.

2. Access to Professional-Grade Tools

Water damage restoration professionals use various cutting-edge tools to ensure that all extra water has been removed from a property.

Shop vacuums, air movers, and dehumidifiers are part of the sophisticated drying tools a reputable restoration company would have.

Air movers enhance evaporation, which aids in the drying process, and can reduce indoor humidity to a manageable level. On the other hand, dehumidifiers are used to eliminate water from the air, building materials, and belongings.

You most likely don't have any of these tools to do the job effectively, and buying them would cost you more than hiring a professional.

3. Identifying water leak sources

Sometimes it can be challenging to locate the source of water damage yourself. People often neglect the possibility of multiple causes for water leaks and just address the most obvious ones. However, this can be dangerous, as concealed sources of minor leaks through a wall or ceiling can cause massive damage to your property's structure.

Water removal professionals like SERVPRO of Metairie have modern tools to find water damage before it's too late. Their knowledge can be pretty helpful in swiftly locating the origins of water leaks and fixing them to protect your property.

4. Attention to detail

Water damage restoration requires attention to detail to ensure every drop of water has been dried up. This is often not the case if you go the DIY route. You may not have the patience to do the job as meticulously as a professional would, and even if you do, you may not know whether there's still moisture soaked into the structures.

On the other hand, water removal professionals are trained and certified and would give the job the attention it needs. They are also experienced in finding and eliminating any moisture on the property.

SERVPRO of Metairie outlines six reasons to never DIY water damage restoration

10/22/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Metairie lists six reasons to always hire water damage restoration specialists.

Your first instinct, when faced with a water damage situation in your home or business, is likely to clean it yourself to save money. However, it’s not always that easy. Water damage is one task you should never do on your own, as it requires experience and, if not handled properly, can result in more damage.

SERVPRO® of Metairie is a leader in the Jefferson, LA, water damage restoration industry. They’ve outlined 6 fundamental reasons why you should never handle water damage restoration on your own.

1. You might not be thorough enough.

Water damage, unlike gardening and landscaping, leaves little space for errors. If you fail to dry the water properly, any remaining moisture will permeate your property, causing structural damage and mold growth.

Professional water damage restoration companies have the expertise and experience to deal with these issues. They know the steps to take to properly dry a water-damaged surface, how long it takes, and the signs that indicate the absence of any water.

When you hire a restoration specialist, you take the burden off yourself and can rest assured of a thorough restoration.

2. It will cost you more in the long run.

While it may seem like DIY water damage restoration will save you money, it may cost you more in the future. If not properly dried, the remaining water can cause rot, drywall damage, ceiling damage, and mold growth, which would drive up repair costs.

It's always best to hire an experienced water damage restoration professional from the beginning to do the task effectively.

3. It’s time-consuming.

Cleaning up after water damage is extremely time-consuming. The restoration process should ideally start immediately after you notice the incident. If you take on this project on your own, it's unlikely that you'll have the time to fully focus on it and finish it quickly.

Hiring a professional takes the burden off your shoulders.

The team will fully commit to clearing off any standing water and restoring your property to its preloss state.

4. You might not have the right tools

Water damage restoration can require specialized tools like industrial pumps, fans, and dehumidifiers, depending on the size. You will find it difficult to do the job efficiently if you don’t have most of these tools, and buying them would be a massive investment.

Hiring a water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Metairie would ensure you don’t have to worry about these tools. These professionals will come with these specialized tools that make it easier to remove standing water, dry your property and belongings, and find any hidden moisture.

5. The risk of mold growth

Mold can grow on a wet surface in just about 24 hours. So if you delay water damage restoration or do it ineffectively, you’ll end up with a mold problem in the affected areas.

Calling a water damage restoration professional ensures you won’t have to worry about mold growth on your property.

6. You can endanger yourself.

Water damage restoration comes with several risk factors, from water pollution to electrocution and structural damage. There’s always the chance that the property may have lost its balance, putting you at risk when you go inside. The water can also contain microorganisms and bacteria that can cause health effects.

When you work with water damage restoration professionals, they’ll know what to do to mitigate these risks in each situation.

5 reasons you should hire a water damage restoration company

9/12/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary: SERVPRO of Metairie outlines the importance of hiring a water damage specialist to handle water damage in your home or business.

Water damage from a pipe burst, flood, storm damage, appliance malfunction, or others can cause extensive damage to your home or business.

You can reduce the damage and safeguard some of your possessions if you move quickly to get the water out. While water removal may seem easy, it is not an easy or enjoyable task and is often best left to professionals.

The professionals at SERVPRO® of Metairie, a leading water damage restoration company in Elmwood share key reasons homeowners and businesses should hire a professional water damage restoration company when faced with water damage.

1. Extremely fast turnaround time

It is important to act fast when dealing with water damage to prevent any mold or mildew issues from arising. Additionally, the fast restoration will reduce interior structural damage to your home, saving you money on repairs.

So, ask yourself how quickly you can get the water out and dry out everywhere compared to a professional.

A water restoration company like SERVPRO of Metairie can quickly arrive at your property, start the restoration process, and get it done quickly and correctly. If it takes you two days to thoroughly dry your home, a professional can do it in hours.

2. Saves you money on repairs over time

Water damage can result in more losses if left for a long time or when the restoration isn’t done correctly. There’s still a high chance of water being hidden inside your walls and floors, even after you’ve cleared the standing water from your home and cleaned everywhere.

This hidden water will permeate the structures of your building, causing the wood to rot, the walls to crack, the ceiling to be discolored, and more. All of these things will cost you so much money in repairs.

By hiring a water restoration professional, you can be certain that the restoration will be done perfectly. These restoration specialists can find hidden water in various parts of your home and will only finish up when everything is completely dried.

3. Cutting-edge tools and methods

Most homeowners rely on fans and sunlight to dry their homes after water damage. However, this hardly ever dries up the hidden moisture and typically leads to more damage. Professional water damage companies like SERVPRO of Metairie have state-of-the-art equipment for removing standing water, cleaning your home, and drying out every bit of hidden moisture. They’ll ensure every part of your home or business is completely clean.

4. Content restoration

Professional water damage companies go beyond cleaning your home to offer content restoration services to restore affected belongings. So, if your furniture, rugs, and other belongings were affected by the water, the professionals would clean and dry them to restore them to their pre-damaged state. This goes a long way to saving you money on buying new ones.

5. Prevents mold growth

The second biggest problem in your house or place of business after water is mold growth. Mold can grow anywhere, including inside wooden paneling and on ceilings. Mold can cause health effects on you and your family.

It is advisable not to attempt to remove mold on your own as it may lead to health effects. When you hire professional water damage restoration services, you can be sure that any mold will be eradicated and your property will be shielded against subsequent mold growth.

SERVPRO of Metairie offers effective mold remediation services in Lakewood, New Orleans

8/4/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary:  Mold growth in your home can cause cause health effects; here are the effective ways to solve your mold problem.

Finding mold in your shower, basement, or kitchen can be alarming. A small amount of mold may not cause health effects, but knowing to get rid of it on time can keep it from becoming a bigger issue. When left untouched, mold can spread quickly to a larger area and cause health effects.

SERVPRO of Metairie, a professional mold removal company serving the Lakewood, New Orleans, LA area, shares five effective tips for removing mold from homes.

1. Applying Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is an antibacterial and antifungal solution. It is effective for mold removal. You can use it safely on a wide range of surfaces like kitchen appliances, bathroom fixtures, hard flooring, and wall surfaces.

Pour the concentration into a spray bottle. You can begin by testing areas or surfaces that are not conspicuous to prevent discoloration or damage. Once you are satisfied with the result, spray the moldy surfaces and leave them for 15 minutes. After that, scrub the area to remove black mold and stains.

2. Using vinegar for mold removal

White vinegar is a nontoxic acidic product used to clean, deodorize and disinfect. Vinegar can kill more than 80 percent of mold species, including black mold. You can use this solution safely on a wide range of surfaces.

Pour undiluted vinegar into a spray bottle, and spray onto the moldy surfaces. Leave it for about an hour. Finally, wipe the area with water and allow the surface to dry.

3. Using baking soda to remove black mold

Baking soda is not only effective for removing odors in the fridge, but it can also help to get rid of black mold. Baking soda not only kills mold but also absorbs and encourages mold growth. The best part is that it is safe for your family and pets.

Pour a tablespoon of baking soda into a spray bottle filled with water and shake until it dissolves. Spray the moldy area and scrub the surface using a scrub brush. After that, rinse the surface with water to remove any residual mold stains and the baking soda itself.

4. Removing black mold with essential oils

For centuries, millions of people have used essential oils in aromatherapy. But very few people know that some essential oils, such as tea tree oil are effective insect repellents and deodorizers. It is a natural fungicide that removes mold quickly and ensures mold spores do not come back.

Mix tree oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle and shake vigorously to achieve a fine blend. Spray the moldy area, leave it for 45 minutes, and then wipe away with a dry towel. Essential oils can cause health effects in some people, so ensure you wear protective gloves when applying them.

5. Curbing mold growth with lemons

Lemons are a natural antiseptic, bleach, and stain remover. Additionally, it is one of the most effective ways to remove black mold in the house. The high concentration of acid in lemons helps break down mold spores, leaving you with a clean and disinfected surface.

Juice three to five lemons into a cup and pour over the affected area. Wait for 10 minutes, and then wipe the surface with a damp towel. You can also scrub the surface to get rid of tough mold stains.

SERVPRO of Metairie outlines the telltale signs of roof water damage

7/25/2022 (Permalink)

Blog summary: Your roof may be leaking and damaging your home's structures. Here are the signs to look out for.

Most homeowners assume their roof is in okay condition until it leaks or shows overt signs of water damage. There are several indicators that your roof has experienced water damage and needs repair, including water stains on the ceiling and missing shingles.

Homeowners need to pay close attention to these warning signals and make the required fixes to prevent the issue from worsening.

To this end, SERVPRO of Metairie, the leading roof leak water damage expert in Lakewood, New Orleans, has outlined the telltale signs to help homeowners identify roof water damage.

1. Watermarks and spots on your ceiling

Water stains and spots on the ceiling are the most common signs that your home suffers from water damage. Your roof can become leaky, allowing water to get into your ceiling.

Over time, the slow leak that seeps down the ceiling will typically lead to dark water stains, discolored spots, and darkened ceiling paint.

Most of the time, what appears to be a small stain on your ceiling can quickly transform into a significant issue. So it's essential to act promptly and have it fixed.

2. Water stains on the wall's exterior

Water stains on a building's exterior point to flashing damage. The flashing can become rusty over time, allowing rainwater to seep in, which would cause wet spots on the walls.

It's essential to fix any flashing damage immediately you notice it. If water has already entered your home, you may need to have a water damage expert inspect it to prevent mold development.

3. Mold growth

Mold can spread quickly throughout your house, even from the smallest roof leak. Any part of your ceiling or walls can develop mold if left damp for over 24 hours. So it's essential to act quickly once you notice any leaks.

Hire a water damage restoration expert to remove any mold, fix a leaky roof and treat the moist surface to ensure the mold doesn't return.

4. Missing or broken shingles

Have you seen any missing, blistered, warped, or buckled shingles on your roof? If so, your roof may have suffered storm damage, and your home may also have been affected.

Missing shingles expose your roof to the elements. When your roof has missing shingles and is subjected to rain, wind, or hailstorm, a roof leak is almost inevitable, which leads to water damage.

5. Bad Smells

As a homeowner, you need to find the source of any distinctive odors in your home that persist for more than a few days. When water damage occurs, you may perceive a musty odor each time you use the heater or open specific windows.

Check your attic to see whether any insulation rolls or batts are damaged, as the odor can occasionally be caused by damp insulation.

5. Sun in the attic

Do you notice sunshine filtering between the beams when you go to your attic? A leaky roof is almost always indicated by sunlight entering your attic. The presence of daylight outside your house indicates that water may also find its way inside.

If the roof beams exhibit moisture or mold development, then the attic has likely already sustained water damage. In virtually all cases, a roof replacement or repair is necessary to stop future water damage.

SERVPRO of Metairie explains how to fix ceiling water damage

4/26/2022 (Permalink)

Blog Summary:  The water restoration professionals at SERVPRO of Metairie highlight the steps you can take to fix a water-damaged ceiling.

Water, despite its many benefits, can wreak unimaginable havoc when it comes into contact with your property. When it comes in contact with your ceilings, it can make them look unsightly or, worse, damage the ceiling to the point where it collapses and falls apart.

These situations can be avoided if you address water damage quickly and seriously. The water damage repair professionals at SERVPRO of Metairie have outlined the causes of ceiling damage and how to fix it.

Common Causes of Ceiling Water Damage

The most common causes of water leaks in ceilings are plumbing issues or roof leaks. Slow leaks that lead to yellowish-brown spots cause the majority of the ceiling water damage.

Although seeing water spots on your ceiling may not seem like a serious problem, a significant leak can quickly cause water to burst through your ceiling.

Simple Steps to Fix Water Damage to the Ceiling

1. Safety First

Prior to addressing any water damage, especially in the ceiling, make sure it is safe to do so. Because ceiling water damage often involves electrical wiring, it is imperative to make sure there is no risk of electrocution prior to attempting to perform water removal. Shut off the power to the affected area, or the property at the electrical panel only if it is safe to enter the property. Hire a professional restoration service and wait for their arrival if you are unsure it is safe to enter or touch.

2. Turn off Water Sources

Before you can start making repairs after a water damage incident, you must first of all address the water source. Doing this is important to avoid any future water damage. If the source of water is not turned off or repaired before ceiling water damage repair takes place, the ceiling will be further damaged which will make your repair efforts go to waste.

Since water can spread, the source of the damage could be far away from the ceiling. So, once you've discovered it, you should immediately get all necessary repairs or replacements done to stop the water from flowing.

3. Dry Affected Areas

Once the water source has been fixed, the affected parts of the ceiling can then be dried to begin the restoration process. You’ll need towels and a fan to clean and dry the ceiling. You need to keep drying and fanning the ceiling until it’s no longer saturated. You may need to puncture the ceiling if it’s bulging to release any held-up water.

Consider putting a bucket and tarp on the floor before you start the process to help prevent flooring damage.

4. Remove the Damaged Sections

Ceilings can become saturated beyond repair. In that case, you’ll have to remove that part of the ceiling. Heavily water-infiltrated wallboards will sag or collapse when touched.

Then place cloths or tarps on the floor and remove any part of the ceiling that is swollen or visibly affected.

5. Carry out Necessary Ceiling Repairs

Once you’ve removed unsalvageable materials and thoroughly dried the area, the next step is to repair any part that can be salvaged and replace the parts you removed. Measure the holes in the areas where you cut out. Then, to cover the hole, cut out a new piece of the same material that is larger than the original piece and use a utility knife to trim it down.

6. Seal and Paint the Ceiling after Priming it

After the plaster has dried, apply a sealing primer to the damaged area. Not only will this prevent water spots and stains from forming, but it will also prevent the ceiling from absorbing paint. It will take way more coats of paint if you don't use a primer. Before you apply your topcoat, apply a minimum of two coats of primer.

7. Hire a Water Damage Restoration and Cleaning Professional

Water damage is a massive emergency and it is critical to act quickly. The above-listed steps may sound simple in theory but are quite difficult in practice, which is why you should consider leaving the job to a professional water damage repair company like SERVPRO of Metairie.

Water damage repair professionals can help in the restoration of water damage in homes and commercial spaces, including water-damaged ceilings. They will identify and fix the water source, and then proceed to clean, dry, and repair any damaged parts.

Mold Maintenance Standards | SERVPRO of Metairie

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Mold spores are a natural occurrence present just about everywhere — including your Metairie, LA, business. When exposed to moisture these microscopic particles can quickly grow into a large threat, leaving your business at risk for many issues. Federal organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and Occupational Safety and Health Administration do not set any mold standards, but that doesn’t mean mold cleanup isn’t an aggressive process. Here are three steps to keep in mind when dealing with mold.

1. Water Damage

Mold spores become an issue when exposed to moisture and allowed to grow into colonies. Regularly check for any threat of water damage in your business, including leaking pipes or drafty windows. Furthermore, maintain appropriate levels of humidity within the building to limit moisture levels in the air.

2. Check Building Materials

To alleviate the uncertainty of mold standards, ensure building standards are up to code. Proper insulation installed around windows, piping, and exterior walls minimize a buildup of condensation, keeping mold at bay. Verify that your business is well-ventilated and regularly check porous materials such as drywall, ceiling tiles, and wood for any signs of mold damage.

3. Contact Us!

Time is of the essence when it comes to mold infestation; an IICRC certified company will have the training and professional equipment to safely and effectively mediate the mold damage in your business in a time-sensitive manner.

Thanksgiving Safety Tips with SERVPRO of Metairie

11/24/2021 (Permalink)

During the holidays for many people, the kitchen is the heart of the home. From testing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations.

So keeping fire safety top of mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there’s a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire.

Top 10 safety tips
  1. Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
  2. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
  3. Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
  4. Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
  5. Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  6. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
  7. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
  8. Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
  9. Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
  10. Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.

If your home suffers any water, fire, or smoke damage during your holiday feasts and parties, please call the professionals at (504) 496-0193.

Got Mold?

1/20/2021 (Permalink)

Are you wondering if you really have to worry if you can get mold in the winter?

Turning up the heater in the colder months will keep you cozy and warm. However, did you know that this very warmth also creates the perfect environment for a colony of mold? These infestations are both unsightly and can cause health effects for those who have allergies to these organisms. A mold colony can also spread quickly and secretly within your walls, compromising their strength and making your home or business unsafe. Mold and mildew, have recognizable differences. Mildew has a flat surface and will appear powdery. It begins growing with white coloration and will become yellow, brown, or black over time, while mold can be a wide range of colors and will have a fluffy appearance. The spores for both are everywhere, even in the air we breathe, and their risk increases when winter arrives since mold and mildew would much rather be where it’s warm when it’s cold outside (just like us).

Here are some tips for mold prevention this winter:

  • Mold and mildew feed on any organic material. Old food, the rug on your kitchen floor, or wooden cupboards - it’s all fair game for these organisms. Make sure surfaces are kept clean and dry and don’t allow food to sit out and become moist and warm.
  • Moisture condenses when it comes into contact with a colder area, so you will most likely see mold or mildew on tile grout, windowsills, and baseboards during the colder months. Taking care of leaks and areas that collect water right away will be a big help in keeping mold from becoming part of the family.
  • Once a colony establishes itself you can’t ever get rid of it completely. Once the moisture, warmth, and food it needs are reintroduced it will simply start to grow again.
  • Windows, exterior doorways, skylights, and indoor plumbing that are not properly sealed will produce conditions that are attractive to mold colonies.
  • Keeping the air dry in kitchens, laundries, and bathrooms will be a big help when it comes to preventing mold this winter. Running these fans during times when the air is moist will do wonders. You can also use dehumidifiers in your home to prevent mold from establishing itself; follow the established recommendations for keeping your home at the proper level of humidity for this purpose.

Rest assured you actually don’t have to worry about mold in the winter, if you take the proper steps to prevent it from colonizing.

If you have any concerns or suspect mold growth call  SERVPRO of Metairie, and allow us to put your mind to ease and solve your issue.

Recover & Reopen Your Business After a Disaster | SERVPRO® of Metairie

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

Building up your own business is an extremely rewarding thing, but when it comes to the possibility of a natural disaster, the future is never certain. Many businesses are permanently derailed by disasters annually due to the difficult task of recovery—but thankfully, risks can be significantly mitigated by planning in advance for how you will recover.

Safety is always the top concern when it comes to preparing your business for the worst, but once your safety plans are in place, you can begin thinking about the physical recovery process. Handling insurance, restoration, communications and applying for disaster assistance can all work together to get your doors reopened faster so you can get back to business.

Get Your Doors Reopened Faster After a Disaster Strikes Your Business

Check in with your insurance and restoration providers. There are many things that might be covered on your commercial policy, but because each one differs, it is best to check with your provider to know for sure. Once you do this, it is time for the restoration to begin—contact your commercial restoration provider quickly so they can begin formulating a response for you.

Make customers aware of the recovery plan. It is smart to get in touch with your customers right away after a disaster so they are aware of what to expect. Social media can provide a simple way to reach people quickly, and can give you the chance to promote any ways that customers can support you during the closure, such as buying gift cards or pre-purchasing items online to help your revenue during a difficult time.

See what disaster assistance you qualify for. After an official disaster event is declared, there will be many resources available to business owners such as disaster recovery loans from the Small Business Administration. These loans tend to be easy to qualify for, carry low-interest rates and can be used for many different expenses that a business owner may incur throughout the recovery process.

If your business has been damaged due to a disaster, we’re here to help. Contact us at any hour to report your damage or to learn more about our commercial restoration services.

Practicing Fire Prevention While Enjoying Winter Holidays | SERVPRO® of Metairie

11/10/2020 (Permalink)

House fires can occur at any time of the year and regardless of the weather—but during periods of cool weather in the winter, their likelihood is increased. Winter is the peak time for household fires based on reporting from the Red Cross. There are many reasons why house fires may occur, but many winter and holiday activities do increase the likelihood that a fire can occur.

Cooking accidents are always a top cause of fires, and people do tend to cook more when the weather turns cooler. Additionally, using space heaters, fireplaces and holiday decorations can all increase the risk of a house fire, too—here are some tips for how you can still enjoy these winter activities safely.

Enjoy Winter Activities While Keeping Your Fire Risk Low

Keep safe when cooking. Most frequently, household fires are caused by accidents surrounding cooking and baking—and with more people cooking holiday meals or baking winter treats, this is especially true during the cooler months. When in the kitchen, be very careful about where flammable objects are placed, never leave cooking food unattended and keep a fire extinguisher in the vicinity at all times, just in case.

Heat the house with proper precautions. A space heater is a great tool for knocking the chill out of the air, but it is important to always use them carefully as they are responsible for many fires every year. Any space heater should be equipped with safety features such as tip-over and overheating sensors, and never used around any flammable objects. If you are using a fireplace to heat your home, make sure your chimney has been inspected for the season and you practice all recommended fire-safe habits.

Decorate with care. Winter holiday decorations such as string lights are festive and fun, but they can introduce more dangers as well. Around 25% of fires of Christmas trees are started by decorations, but by checking your cords for wear and tear, unplugging everything when it will be unattended and safely plugging things into multiple outlets, you can greatly reduce the chances of this occurring.

If you have damage due to a house fire, you can depend on us to help. Contact us 24 hours a day to report damage and receive a quick response from our certified restoration technicians. Get in touch today.

A Guide for Picking the Right Restoration Company | SERVPRO® of Metairie

8/11/2020 (Permalink)

large downed tree laying on top of light brown house Choosing the right restoration company is crucial to getting things back to normal. Call SERVPRO of Metairie to set up an appointment.

A storm’s impact on a neighborhood can be devastating. Not only is it emotionally stressful, but if there are severe damages, it can be even worse. The damages from storms have risen in cost in recent years due to damages becoming more severe as a whole. That is why we always advise having a plan in place for what to do and who to call in advance.

If you need storm restoration at your home or business, the company you choose will set the tone for the entire experience. A trustworthy company that can handle the work and be there for you whenever you need is a must to provide you with valuable peace of mind during a stressful time. Here are some tips for determining who to give your business to:

How to Decide Who to Give Your Business to for Storm Restoration

Check on their reputation. It is important to do your research before deciding on a restoration company to use. Not only is it a big decision, but the frequency of restoration scams is on the rise, meaning it is best to be cautious. When you do your research on us, you will find that we are active both in Metairie and in the restoration industry as a whole, and we are proud of our fantastic reputation.

Check on their plans for high demand. Unlike fire or general water damage, storm damage typically impacts a large area all at once, meaning the restoration services in the area can easily get swamped if they do not have a plan. Fortunately, we have a national SERVPRO® brand to back us, meaning we can call for backup whenever we need it in order to provide everyone with the same level of speed and service.

Check on their emergency response times. Getting your storm damage addressed quickly is not just for peace of mind—it is also essential to preventing more damage from happening. That is why we are here for you whenever you need us with our 247 emergency line. You can call us as soon as you discover damage, and we will make it out to you as quickly as possible to get the restoration process in motion.

When you have damage from a storm to your home or commercial building, you can always depend on us to handle it. Contact us at any hour to see our exceptional service in action.

Is Mold Still An Issue In The Winter?

1/2/2020 (Permalink)

Mold spores with SERVPRO logo Trust the experts at SERVPRO of Metairie for any of your Mold concerns.

Are you wondering if you really have to worry if you can get mold in the winter?

Turning up the heater in the colder months will keep you cozy and warm. However, did you know that this very warmth also creates the perfect environment for a colony of mold? These infestations are both unsightly and unhealthy and can make life truly miserable for those who have allergies to these organisms.

Mold Damage Issues In Metairie

Mold Problem in Metairie? Call SERVPRO for Remediation "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Offers for Metairie Area Homes Effective Mold Remediation

Typical weather conditions in Metairie can place homeowners at risk of mold growth and subsequent damage. Seasonal weather patterns, including hurricanes and tropical storms, increase the potential for damp and possibly flooded conditions within local residences. We frequently see mold proliferation because of these circumstances, but we have strategies to remediate any mold growth that occurs and to combat the wetness fueling it.

Mold damage remediation in the Metairie area is a commonly requested service for our restoration business. The community’s location near Lake Pontchartrain exacerbated by the yearly average of over 70 percent humidity makes for very moist conditions even without severe weather. Mold spores grow within 24 to 48 hours when they absorb water, and the moisture necessary does not need to be in puddles or droplets. Water vapor in the air of your home exceeding 60 percent humidity is enough to start a mold colony on a steep growth curve.

SERVPRO follows EPA guidelines to contain and remove active colonies, using physical barriers and professional equipment like negative pressure air scrubbers to filter and vent airborne mold particles. Mold spreads quickly when disturbed, and we counsel our customers to seek expert assistance rather than use do it yourself remedies. Our technicians employ proven EPA registered disinfectants to sanitize areas cleared of mold, and HEPA-equipped vacuums to eradicate lingering particles on surfaces.

Our SERVPRO mold remediation team trains not only to locate, but also contain, and remove the microbial infestations endured by our customers. We work relentlessly as well to find the source of moisture and offer practical and effective advice on how to minimize water in any form so molds cannot continue to grow. Roofs and gutters contribute to excess moisture if not in good repair. Even tiny plumbing leaks can mean significant mold problems if ignored. Flooding events after major storms must be remediated fast, or the mold grows within just a couple of days. High indoor humidity must be lowered and then maintained at 45 percent or less for the best outcome per our training and experience.

SERVPRO of Metairie employs only thoroughly trained mold remediators and uses the industry’s best practices to remediate and then help prevent future mold growth. Call us at (504) 468-3046 for a consultation with one of our expert mold abatement specialists.

Our Metairie Rapid Response Team Can Help You With Flood Damage In Your Property

A nearby road overflow can cause significant issues in the ground levels of your property — heavy rainfall results in sewer systems backing up and overflowing with contaminated Black Water. Due to the potentially harmful effects of Black Water, it is essential to hire a professional, qualified technician to help repair and restore your property safely. Indeed, many of your possessions can be salvaged by using professional cleaning equipment promptly.

Where the is Flood Damage in Metairie homes, the likelihood of contaminants being spread around the home is high. In the circumstances, it is not uncommon for our technicians to wear Hazmat suits to protect themselves from pathogens during the cleanup operation. We may also have to remove sections of drywall to clean in and behind walls, floors, and fittings. Left behind debris is not only odorous but have the potential to be harmful if not dealt with thoroughly.

For owners who find themselves in this position, it is only natural to immediately assume the worst, especially where personal possessions are concerned. We enable our technicians to achieve this by providing them with state-of-the-art cleaning equipment and technology.

We can assess items immediately on site to decide which possessions are salvageable and which need disposal. Generally speaking, porous materials absorb black water making them exceptionally difficult to clean; this could include your carpets or curtains. However, where they are valuable fabrics, we can send them to a specialized facility for mechanical cleaning using Esporta washing machines. These equipment are expensive because they are advanced. However, SERVPRO provides technicians with everything they need to restore items rather than replace them.

Floods are considerable emergencies which is why SERVPRO training involves a rapid-response unit as well as a 24-hour emergency call line. Our skilled specialists are local to the area and can reach you fast to help mitigate loss and reduce the risk of permanent damage.

In Metairie, Understanding the Nature of Smoke and Heat Simplify Fire Damage Cleanup

Why Should a Metairie Home Suffer Fire & Smoke Damage? Call SERVPRO for Cleanup and Restoration

Why You Need SERVPRO To Restore Fire Damaged Homes in Metairie

Metairie residents are very familiar with the effects water has on their homes and other property. Fire is, fortunately, a much lesser known problem for most of us. The effects fire has on the same property can be far more damaging and often more difficult to clean and remove.

Restoring Metairie homes with fire damage requires special knowledge. So why SERVPRO? Our teams train extensively with a large inventory of equipment and cleaning agents to return as much structural and personal property to its pre-fire condition as possible.

Since items physically touched by the flames are often damaged past repair, our efforts center on the property covered by residues left by the smoke. Dry or wet, residues are often the majority of the restorable damage for our work teams.

When a fire burns fast and hot, the smoke contains fewer aerosols such as varnishes; it naturally leaves a drier, powdery residue. It also stains surfaces less deeply than wet ones, and the odor is far less noticeable as well. All of this makes each piece of furniture or a ceiling panel covered in them easier to clean.

SERVPRO technicians can use dry sponges to remove most of these residues. If the layer is thick, they apply either water or a mild cleaning agent to break them away from the item. For hard surfaces and carpets, they also have the option of using commercial grade vacuums to draw off of the surfaces.

A fire that burns slow and at a lower temperature generates smoke with more aerosols, leaving wet residues on surfaces. That means the fire consumed a much larger amount of varnishes, solvents, and other liquids. A slower fire moves air less quickly, which gives the smoke more opportunity to find its way into cracks and crevices in the property. The odor is much stronger as well.

Removing these residues requires stronger cleaning agents, and brushes rather than sponges to remove them from most surfaces. For some stone surfaces, the crevices are deep enough that technicians must use a stiff, metal brush to dig out the residues or even grind the surface down to remove them.

At SERVPRO of Metairie, our goal is to return every possible item to a clean and usable condition, "Like it never even happened." Call us today at (504) 496-0193 to begin the restoration process. We are here for you.

Timing Is Very Important When Dealing With Fire Damage To Your Metairie Home

12/27/2018 (Permalink)

Once the blaze gets extinguished, it is wise to call in a professional fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO immediately.

Metairie's Fire Damage Experts Talk About The Importance Of Prompt Service

Many owners are unaware of the risk that their Metairie house will suffer from a burn-related issue someday. According to the American Red Cross, dwelling fire damage is one of the most common types of disasters someone can suffer at their home. The organization's website states that more than 30 people every day suffer injuries related to home blazes. Things burning inside personal residences account for over seven billion dollars in property claims each year. Once the blaze gets extinguished, it is wise to call in a professional fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO immediately.

Just like any disaster situation, if the issues are not dealt with right away, secondary problems can begin to develop. Our SERVPRO team provides fast 24/7 service to you when you call us to handle your fire damage situation in Metairie. We know that the longer soot residues stay on surfaces, the more likely they are to cause permanent issues. In some cases, if soils and soot do not get removed from certain surfaces, they may become impossible to clean. If the problems do not get mitigated by professionals promptly, burnt smells can linger and become difficult to remove.

As soon as our SERVPRO team arrives at your residence, we begin the initial test cleaning and estimate process. During this stage, our estimator test cleans affected surfaces inside your building to see to test their cleanability. We then use this testing to determine which of your building materials and contents we can clean and which items will need to be replaced.

Once we get work authorization to begin and we figure out which items we are going to attempt to save by cleaning and refinishing, our highly trained team begins the mitigation process. We start by removing any burnt objects that we know we cannot repair. Next, we remove and clean any remaining soils and soot residues with specialized chemicals. Lastly, we conduct deodorization procedures that rid the structure of unpleasant aromas. If you ever notice fire or smoke-related issues inside your house, call SERVPRO of Metairie at (504) 496-0193 seven days a week.

11/18/2018 (Permalink)

There are times when your home can be affected by fire. Make sure that your family is safe and then contact SERVPRO for remediation.

WHY SERVPRO Is Your Number One Option in Metairie during Fire Damage Restoration

Ever asked yourself WHY SERVPRO is a proven industry leader in fire damage restoration? To begin with, we use advanced technology and techniques when restoring your property to its original state. We adhere to the standards set by the IICRC (The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification). For instance, we may use infrared cameras to detect locations affected by the water that was used to extinguish the fire. Also, we can use hygrometers and moisture detectors to determine the level of moisture saturation in your Metairie home.

Strong odors can develop in your property after it experienced a fire damage event in Metairie. Our SERVPRO team uses appropriate equipment to remove the contaminants and improve the quality of air in the structure. Some of the devices that we use during deodorization and odor removal include thermal Foggers and air scrubbers. Spraying the air with a fragrant has never been a good way of dealing with the odors. Our team locates and removes the odor causing particles. Through thermal fogging, we dispense deodorizing agents that neutralize the smell causing particles.

We understand that restoration and cleaning situations require an immediate response, and that is why we are strategically located. We know that no disaster is too big or too small, so, we give every call the seriousness it deserves. By acting quickly, we increase the chances of salvaging most items and low the restoration costs.

Depending on the surfaces we are attending to and the soot particles in your property, our SERVPRO technicians may decide to use dry or wet cleaning methods. We never repaint surfaces as a way of dealing with the soot; we have to choose an appropriate cleaning procedure before we do the needed repainting. We have faced all fire damage incidents you can think of, that means we are competent enough to work for you.

SERVPRO of Metairie responds 24 hours a day, seven days a week to all commercial and residential cleaning and restoration needs. Call (504) 496-0193 when you need help you can rely on after facing water, fire, storm, or mold damage.
